- Malaria is endemic in Uganda
- Of all hospital patients under 5 years of age, 42% die of Malaria
- Of those over 5 years, 25% die of the disease
- Only 10% of children under 5 years with acute Malaria receive appropriate treatment within 24 hours
- Approximately 62% of pregnant women carry the disease
- Complications in pregnant women include anemia, abortions, stillbirths, premature delivery, low birth weight infants and death
- Resistance to common anti-malarial drugs is 30% and rising
- As much as 25% of a household's monthly income can be spent on treating malaria
- Because of loss of work and school time, and the cost of treatment, malaria enhances poverty
